Life in Corporate World…

Interview in college

For many students joining in the corporate office is their dream, most of them fancy that they will one day become coders, some think that they would earn money, some think of fancy gadgets, some dream of on site trips and  some dream of corporate world has beautiful girls or handsome boys. I agree to this because I am one among them.

Final year of college getting placed in a company is the dream of a student, can’t say it’s really a dream of student but it’s the dream of a parent to see his/her child placed in a company and proudly say others that their son/daughter is placed.

What really happens inside the corporate world?

So on the day one you are put into a training, there is no real use of the training or could I say it’s just a formality like the exams which we have in our colleges, we learn nothing from the training. Similar to college the trainers are typical lecturers if you ask them something they you to search it out, or sometimes to try yourself so that they could remain on the safe side. The trainees are typical students as usual last-minute studies in order to pass the exams. The project called mini project in the last few days is like our mini-project at college, full of fun you can fool your trainer because we are already trained well in making fool of our lecturers.

must hurry… I am late to office

Once we finish our training we think from now on we are going to be happy because there are no more exams and no one who is gonna teach us.

At Office:

So it’s time to go to office, when you reach there you find that you are not alloted project! and the other guy who scored less than you is alloted a project. You will be still happy because you have company of other friends. Now the next tension starts, you start scratching your head thinking when you’re gonna get a project. In many MNC’s they call this period with different names some say it as free pool while some say it as bench period. This is the hardest period of a software engg life, no one to chat with while other employees will be busy working on their projects(In majority of the cases the working really denotes chatting with some other employee at other office). I really can’t say all the employees are chatting because the company is driven by the force of employees. So let’s take it other way some chat while many work.

One day after a month in some cases even months  you get a mail saying that your offered a project and the client wants to interview you before letting you into his project. Now all of a sudden we start taking the books and start reading all the concepts like we do before the lab exams to perform well in viva(I remember still days in college when we used to refer textbooks and study in a hurry to clear the viva and score good marks) .

Third Phase

Now you have joined the project so entire new world all of a sudden. Your manager calls you and says “Whatever you have studied in your training will be of no use here” and gives you a couple of books and asks you to read them. I can’t say really how one feels that minute but you try to comfort yourself.  The entire office looks like a bunch of aliens from different planets now the next task ahead of you is to know each and every one of them(It’s like college again seniors act as seniors). At the end you get along with the freshers in the team and some of your friends and try to feel comfortable and start with the new task which is given to you learning the new things which the manager has given to you.

Can’t really say all the freshers are keenly involved with the job most of them have other plans of going higher studies and some have their own plans of quitting the jobs to join some new companies. These are some hidden secrets which won’t be told unless your really getting intimate with them.

Now let’s say that you given the task of development, where the client provides you the requirements and gives you a deadline of 30 days to complete them…!

Last minute inspiration

Day1: Reading Requirements and chatting

Day2:Chatting with friends

Day3: Chatting

|

Day21:First time you finish reading the client requirement document

Day28: You start coding in panic(this is the inspiration).

Day31: You code but you don’t test it

Your deadline finishes you beg your manager for extension of a day or two. Your not the only person asking for extension but half of the team will be asking for the extension of the time.

Meetings are for fun

I asked my friends about the meeting and what they discuss in the meeting, He says when a meeting is called they will be talking among themselves when they laugh we need to laugh, when they are serious we need to be serious. I asked them twice about the conclusion drawn from the meeting, he turns to me and giggles at me.

I have seen some meetings where people give presentations, draw flow charts, speak well impress other colleges and have cookies. I can’t say all the meetings are like this but conclusions and decisions are made in the meetings. All the decisions are really not taken care of.

Out of the 10 decisions made let’s say less than 5 decisions are met, now again another meeting regarding the other 5 decisions and it goes on… and on…

My senior

Now the most important thing seniors we all have seniors in our schools, in high schools and in colleges. It has always remained the same they make fun of you, shout at you, point you even if they are wrong .. but…but.. let me say they will be always your real teachers your real guidance towards success. Once you get along with them they will be your friends.

There is something you must know from your college days, or can I say even you have shown this to your juniors EGO.

So if your seniors know much then he expects you to work like him, he is the best and he/she expects the same from you. So be careful if you are having a talented senior then your chances of developing in the field is double and at the same time you need to do double the hard work of your friends.

You can seek as much as knowledge from them, its up to you decide that you’re gonna utilize them or not.

So, within you understand all the knowledge and apply them practically it will be almost 2-3 years in the company and by now you will starting to search for a new job expecting a hike in your salary and new expectations that you will be given power.

I am quitting

I expect out of 100, 80 people will ask these questions and less than 20 will get that final reply because all of the exp people are definitely given hike and taken in by different companies…!

All these assumptions are made not to hurt any people. It was made based on my experiences in the company.. Lets hope that I am not hurting any one.

synonyms

This part of the aptitude carries 8 marks in HCL and Infosys its like half of the verbal is synonyms and antonyms. So a little concentration should be provided to this area. Most of the words used are GRE high frequency words and if not they are going to new words.

For early preparation lets say you have couple of months before Infosys or HCL its better you read the editorial column in the news papers and follow the below stated steps.

i. Experiment with synonyms

After you see the meaning of a word, look up its usage in the sentence that is usually present in the dictionary. Note down this sentence. Prepare a new sentence after understanding the meaning of the word.

ii. Prepare sentences with antonyms

So the next step is to find the antonym of the word, this further helps you to store the word well in your mind. Now try to form a sentence or couple of sentences with the antonyms.

iii. Compare synonyms and antonyms

Use both the synonym (a word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word) and the antonym to construct sentences using the same context or situation. This procedure enables you to see a word from both sides.

If you can follow this strategy, it would definitely solve your problem of learning new words without forgetting their meaning.

iv. Important: Use the same context

You should always use the same background to write sentences using a new word, its synonyms and antonyms. If you use different circumstances, events or situations to get acquainted with the meaning and the usage of a word, there is a strong possibility that you may get confused.

It is the context that will always remind you of how the word is used, and will ensure you don’t forget the meaning easily.

This part will work only if you have a sufficient time to work out. Most of us don’t follow these steps so we need a shortcut.

Shortcuts work, you can’t expect 100% result when your gonna use shortcuts and most of these tricks are tricky too…

GRE Techniques can be used:

Week before the placements go for the online test link and apply these techniques and see if they are working out for you… These tricks are enough for all companies, but Infosys it won’t work out

b2

Trick 1

Try to put the word in a sentence or a phrase and guess its meaning

Trick 2

When you have a word try to guess all its synonyms and from the answers see the exact word which has the same meaning, in the case of antonym the opposite meaning

Trick 3

Read all the options, most of us think of time and come up with the answer which has close match to the word. But there is an actual word with the same meaning hidden there.

Trick 4

First know the part of the speech the word is used in… For example the word run can be used as a verb but it could also be used as noun like ‘home run’ so make sure you know the part of speech before answering.

Trick 5

Some words are eye catchy, you immediately think its going to be the antonym/synonym, but most of the guesses are not gonna be right so go through the options once again unless your sure of the answer.

TCS has offices in 42 countries with more than 142 branches across the globe. The company is listed on the National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange of India.
TCS is a flagship subsidiary of one of India’s largest and oldest conglomerate company, the Tata Group, which has interests in areas such as energy, telecommunications, financial services, manufacturing, chemicals, engineering, materials, government and healthcare.
Founded:         1968
Headquarters:Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
Key people:     Ratan Tata (Chairman)
                             S Ramadorai (Vice Chairman)
                             N Chandrasekaran (CEO & MD
Employees:    160,429 (As on 31 March 2010)

GETTING INTO TCS

TCS is a little tough pattern, meanwhile other companies are the same pattern as HCL. TCS has a different pattern. So your RS Agarwal won’t do any magic to be clear it won’t be of any use as far as TCS is concerned..

Pattern followed as per last year 2011 was 35 questions in 40 minutes mostly the questions are in analytical part and the questions are from probability 5questions… Combinations 3 questions… Verbal not much importance it has only 4 to 5 questions.

The important part is that it has negative marking so be careful.. You can navigate between questions you have block where 35 digits are there, you can click on the number you can move to that question and answer so its not going to be like HCL..

TCS aptitude is really tough the only way your going to crack make it to this site and take sample tests nextstep.tcs.com, but the access to this site is only through college given id and password which will be given 2 weeks before TCS makes its campus drive. It depends on college on how earlier they give you access to this portal.

You will be allowed to take two online tests after filling up your profile in the portal. The profile filling alone takes around a day to fill. While attending the test online please make a note of all the questions in your book because these questions will be coming for you on the day of your campus drive with only the numbers changed, sometimes the numbers too won’t change. Two online tests so you will attend 70 questions so sit in groups in the college and try to solve all these questions with the help of your friends or may be with the professors help. The key thing is know the procedure well so that even if the numbers are changed you can solve them. Calculators may or may not be allowed, they were allowed in our college.

I can assure you one more thing TCS will make its first drive to SRM univ… So all the other colleges go to freshersworld.comand get the latest TCS papers written by the SRM students and try to solve those. So be carefull its all in your hands for aptitude.

However for boosting up your confidence I am putting up some sample papers of last years from SRM other colleges so that you could see you could solve them.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD SAMPLE PAPERS

If your a group college like SRM, Valliamal and Eswari maintain a constant touch with your friends in the other colleges because professors in the other colleges might help them… in one way or the other…

So far, its what you have to do before the campus drive.. On that day you need to know some tricks

  1. The batch that attends the first online exam in the morning will have a lower cut off say may be 16marks out of 35marks
  2. The batch that attends the test at the evening will have higher cutoff say 26 marks out of 35 marks
  3. Prepare well go early and do well

This happens because the friends who come out help the others outside and explain them the procedure to solve them and ultimately a lot of people out there know to solve these problems.. If your going to as a second batch listen to those who are in the first batch and understand the problem solving techniques.. My best suggestion be in the second batch if you want some help or be in the first batch if you know everything.. Never wait till the afternoon its the mistake we do..If your going at the end then you must know everything to the cent…

Don’t ever expect the cut off to be 20 or 30 as your friends say… Every information is faulty there just listen to your mind and answer all the questions you know..

This incident happened in Vel Tech the TCS people promised that they would take up all people who have scored above 20 but in the evening batch the cutoff was 27… If your waiting till evening don’t sit silent be solving and be learning…

Once your done with the aptitude I would say your 70% through… Next 30% is your performance at the HR

HR ROUND CRACKING

HR round ==>Technical+Communication

Make a study of the projects which you have did in your pre-final year and final year this is also a part of the interview.. If your project grabs their attention the number of technical questions asked may decrease…

Expect max of 5 questions or minimum of 2 question from technical side they will ask you to write algorithms, explain the logic…

For core side again you need to know C and data structures for others departments it includes JAVA and RDBMS.

C programming : Pointers, Arrays and also know the logic of some famous programs like Fibonacci series. Go through your first year books and see some of the programs in the books… You can also check out the link below to see some programs

CLICK HERE FOR PROGRAMS IN C

Data Structures know about linked lists and searching concepts are important..

They will ask you to write down the logic of the program

Again here be careful with your resume. You will mention the area of interest please be thorough with the area of interest as most of the questions will be asked from there and they expect the best answers from you. So be thorough with your area of interest.

TIP 1

Next step is to prepare for the regular HR interview questions.. I linked up some videos so that you could check them out…Some other questions include for non IT (How can you fit in without computer background)

TIP 2

Please check out the videos I added earlier in the HCL blog to they will also help you out to get through..

This so far is to check your technical knowledge, TCS has a third part in the interview process that is knowledge about the company.. So be sure to google about the company, to know its latest projects, heir products, recent innovation, their stand in current situation..

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Guys as far as the aptitude is concerned please don’t read the answers and go… TCS has 5 lakh questions in database all the questions are the same, sometimes the numbers are the same too but the question asked may change so read the question twice..\

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

That’s it

All the Best….

Great Inspirational Video

Usually there are three types of companies

  1. Enjoy in the beginning suffer at end – TCS
  2. Little masthi and Little work-HCL, wipro
  3. Work now enjoy later – Infosys

Getting into HCL

If you clear the aptitude then be sure that your having 85% chances of getting into the company. The remaining 15% is upto you perform well at the HR level and your going to be the part of the HCL family.

APTITUDE

You need to secure a minimum mark in each section, to get through the aptitude so prepare well in all four streams to clear aptitude…

image

Analytical Aptitude:

math-games-for-kids

Usually probability 4 problems, logarithms 4 problems, exponentials, Combinations, Decimals 3-4 problems, Direction based problems(Trigonometry) 2 problems, Pipes and Cisterns, Simple Interest, Simplification are the areas needed to be concentrated.

 Verbal Aptitude:

The GRE high frequency words will help you in this, Synonyms, Antonyms, Prepositions, Spotting Error, Sentence completion. You can find some tricks in GRE books to solve synonyms and antonyms easily.

 Technical

228-data-structures-front

C, C++, RDBMS, JAVA, Data structures(4-6questions)

Linked lists, Arrays, Queues, Stacks, Trees, Heaps, Hash tables, graphs,Object oriented programming concepts,input/output, manipulation, methods of referencing and assessing data (including pointers), Iteration, decision-making, recursions

 Logical Reasoning

discintra

The section is the tricky part unless you guys practice a little on reading passages and re-arranging the sentences. You will have three to four passage with 3 questions in each so the questions will be like find the synonym of the word and such the regular English we study in our UG.

Rearranging the sentences is also there 5 sentences will be there you need to rearrange them to get a meaningful paragraph there will be two such questions. Find the missing sequence two such questions will be there don’t worry the sequences will be very easy to find. Blood Relations 1 question,Direction  Understanding, Logical Word Sequence, Statement-Conclusion, Statement-Assumption, Data-sufficiency type, Syllogisms

If your college has an online test then keep in mind the following:

  1. You can’t move to the previous question once you click next
  2. Each section will have its own time if u complete the section earlier the excess time will not be added to the next section.
  3. You will have a time gap of 2 min in between each section to rest.
  4. You can’t jump over questions.

If you are through so far then you can be sure that your going to be into HCL unless you spoil it by yourself..

So most of you would be guessing how can you guys spoil your chances!! The answer is simpleSpeaking in local languages, most of you would never seen what’s in your in resume because it would have been a copy your friends resume

Cracking the HR interview (It’s a piece of cake as far as I could tell you just 10 min interview)

Spend some time looking into your resume because the questions the HR will be asking will be from your resume(Like what’s your aim, Where do you see yourself after 5 years)

Next important area is the projects. Have a good knowledge of the projects which you have done in the 2 year and also he will be asking you on your final year project so please make a study of the final year project.

Next are some basic questions like Tell me about yourself? Why should I hire you? Why do you want to join HCL why not some other company? Your are of interest. Make a little study about the company.

Some helping videos make sure you pay little attention the first time

Widely asked questions

Some times if your unlucky it could be little technical so for core departments C, Data Structures and Microprocessor for IT departments additional to this you have RDBMS and JAVA to worry about…

He will ask you if there is any questions… Ask him something about company…

Million dollar question tell me about yourself
